Roads of Death Worldwide

Most drivers sometimes face unsafe road conditions. Dangers and accidents can occur in many different ways such as poor weather, drunk drivers, and simple human mistakes. However, sometimes the condition of the road itself can put your life in jeopardy. There are many dangerous roads like this in the world including the North Yungas Road in Bolivia, the Siberian Road to Yakutsk in Russia, the Leh–Manali Highway in India, the Sichuan-Tibet Highway in China, and the Halsema Highway in the Philippines. They are regarded as the most dangerous roads in the world.

 

The North Yungas Road

The North Yungas Road or sometimes called “Road of the Death” is a  69-kilometre road that leads from La Paz to Coroico, 56 kilometres northeast of La Paz in the Yungas region of Bolivia.

 

The North Yungas Road is believed as the most dangerous road in the world.

 

The road is famous for its extreme danger. It is believed to be the world's most dangerous road. Narrow width and lack of guardrails are reasons why the road becomes dangerous. In addition, the fog and rain can limit the visibility, make the road surface muddy and cause many accidents. It is estimated that the death road has taken the life of between 200 and 300 travelers per year.

 

The Siberian Road to Yakutsk

The long winter of 10 months with heavy snow, ice and reduced visibility makes the Russian Federal Highway become one of the most dangerous road in the world. The highway is not paved, the winter condition is so hard and the summer rains happen frequently, all of which create traffic jam every time.

 

The Leh–Manali Highway

The Leh-Manali Highway is known as one of the most complicated and challenging roads in the world

 

The Leh-Manali Highway, situated in India, spans over 297 miles among the Himalaya mountain range. The road passes through some of the highest mountains in the world and is located from 2 to 3 miles above sea level. With snow, landslides and terrain making the journey difficult for any driver. The road was built and is maintained by the Indian Army.

 

The Sichuan-Tibet Highway

Landslides and rock avalanches happen so frequently on the road and have caused a lot of car accidents and killed many people

 

The 2,412-km-long Sichuan-Tibet Highway between Chengdu and Tibet spans 14 high 4,000-5000m mountains and dozens of famous rivers such as Dadu River, Jinsha River, Lantsang River, and Nujiang. It also crosses numerous dangerous sections.

 

The Halsema Highway

Plenty of accidents have happened on the Halsema Highway

 

The Halsema Highway runs through the Central Cordillera Valley in Philippines. It is about 150 miles long and nearly unpaved. The road is also known for the rock slides and mud slides. Besides, it runs through steep cliff faces without any guard rails or other safety devices. Narrow roads and steep cliff faces make it almost impassable during the rainy season. This route is definitely one of the most dangerous roads in the world.
