A Tour to Noel Kempff

The Noel Kempff Mercado National Park is located 600 Km northeast from Santa Cruz city. It is one of the largest ( 1.523.000 ha ) and most intact parks in the Amazon Basin. This park is wonderful, has a unique beauty and is one of the most protected and bio diverse places on earth. This is why it has been declared ¨Natural Patrimony of the Humanity¨ by UNESCO in 2000.

The date of its foundation was June 28 1979. Its original name was Parque Nacional Huanchaca, but was then changed to Parque Nacional Noel Kempff Mercado in honor of the late Dr. Noel Kempff Mercado, for his research and discoveries in the Park. In 1986 Dr. Noel Kempff Mercado, and two men with him had flown into the Park inadvertently landed at a clandestine cocaine laboratory, where they were killed by drug traffickers.

NKMNP includes a large section of the Huanchaca Plateau and surrrounding lowlands. The plateau is 150 km long and 50 km wide, and covers a total area of 6.800 square kilometers. The largest river in the area is the Iténez River which marks the border with Brazil, to the north of the park. It meets with the Mamoré River which, at the same time, meets with the Madera River, one of the main tributaries of the Amazon River. The park is part of the drainage system of the Iténez River Basin which includes the sub-basins of the Verde, Paucerna and Paraguá rivers. The Verde and Paucerna rivers have their origins on the plateau and their watercourses form beautiful falls such as the Fawcett, Federico Ahlfeld and Arco Iris. The Paraguá River dominates the lowlands to the west. This river flows into the Iténez and in the rainy season it overflows large extensions of flooded forests and savannah wetlands. To the west of the plateau, and in the lowlands, there are three great fields that become flooded at varying levels during the rainy season, and several lagoons of different size.

For visitors, there are 2 entrances with tourism facilities: Flor de Oro on the North side and Los Fierros on the South side.

The story says that hundreds of years ago, a group of natives called Guarasug´we –originally from Paraguay- populated these Bolivian lands. On the north side of the Noel Kempff Mercado Park, several stones are found that show human facial characteristics, but have not been rigorously studied (yet).

With an altitudinal range of 200 m to nearly 1,000 m, Noel Kempff is a site of a rich mosaic of habitat types including evergreen amazon rainforests, palm forests, cerrado, swamps, savannahs, gallery forests, and semi-deciduous dry forests. The cerrado habitats found on the Caparú Meseta have been isolated for millions of years providing an ideal living laboratory for the study of the evolution of these ecosystems. An estimated 4,000 species of flora as well as over 621 bird species (21% of the total for South America), 74 species of reptiles, 62 species of amphibians and fish, 347 species of insects and viable populations of many globally endangered or threatened species live in Park Noel Kempff Mercado.

Park Noel Kempff is blessed with such convergence of different biogeographic characteristics that it houses a diverse array of plants and animals, which in some cases are unique to Bolivia and due to the isolation of the Caparú Plateau some are still waiting to be discovered!!

The frequent sighting of large mammals during hikes into the park’s savannas and forests or while traveling along the extensive river and lagoon systems indicates the incredibly rich fauna. For botanists and plant lovers a trip to Noel Kempff will surely satisfy their interest.

The Caparú plateau (980m), discovered by the English adventurer Percy Fawcet and later inspired Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to write his famous novel ¨The lost world¨, is an imposing and isolated table mountain of Precambrian origin (over a billion years ago), formed by sandy rocks and cuarcits and laced by crystal clear creeks and numerous waterfalls on a landscape characterized by open grasslands and forest islands.

An Unbelievable Wonder

The Nazca Lines are located on the south of the city of Ica, the Pan Americana highway cuts through the desert of sand dunes to km 422, before of Nazca city. There are lines were made by removing the iron oxide coated pebbles which cover the surface of the Nazca desert. When the gravel is removed, they contrast with the light-colored earth underneath. There are several hundred simple lines and geometric patterns on the Nazca plateau, as well as over seventy curvilinear animal, insect, and human figures. The area encompassing the lines is nearly 200 square miles, and the largest figures can be nearly 900 feet long. The lines persist due to the extremely dry, windless, and constant climate of the Nazca region: the Nazca desert is one of the driest on Earth and maintains a temperature around 25ºC (77°F) year round, and the lack of wind has helped keep the lines uncovered to the present day.
The Nazca Lines are gigantic geoglyphs located between Palpa and Nazca desert, there were created by the Nazca culture between 200 BC and 600 AD. There are hundreds of individual figures, ranging in complexity from simple lines to stylized hummingbirds, spiders, monkeys, and lizards. The Nazca lines cannot be recognized as coherent figures except from the air.
Since their discovery, various theories have been proposed regarding the methods and motivations behind the lines’ construction.

OVERFLIGHT NASCA LINES ITINERARY

At 7am transfer to the aerodrome Maria Reiche. Am. Informative video about the Nasca civilization = 45 min.
Fly over the Nasca lines by light Cessna plane (35min): The Nasca lines are located in the desert, a high arid plateau that stretches between Nasca and Palpa on the pampa (a large flat area of southern Peru). The Nasca lines are geoglyphs and geometric line clearings in the Peruvian desert.
The Nasca lines are an enigma. Since their discovery, the Nasca lines have inspired fantastic explanations from ancient gods, a landing strip for returning aliens, a celestial calendar created by the ancient civilization, used for rituals probably related to astronomy, or clans who made up the population and to determine through ritual their economic functions held up by reciprocity and redistribution, or a map of underground water supplies. Flying over the area you can marvel looking at the perfect shape of Animal’s, flowers, plants, objects, and anthropomorphic figures of colossal proportions made with well-defined lines.
After flight transfer to the hotel or to the bus station and end service.

The best excursion to get to know Lima.

This excursion provides a perfect combination (pre-Hispanic era, colonial period and Modern Lima), that enables the visitor to get acquainted with Lima’s complete history.

ITINERARY

We will pick you from your hotel to start the most complete City tour. We will start with a panoramic view from the Huaca Pucllana, a magnificent ceremonial and administrative center of Lima Culture, built in the 4th century AD, and considered by the Incas as ñaupallaqta, a “sacred village”.

Then, we will show you the Historical Center. During this tour you will visit many points of interest such as the Main Square (Plaza Mayor) founded in 1535 by Francisco Pizarro, conqueror of Peru, the Government Palace, the City Hall, the Cathedral and the House of El Oidor. You will see other colonial architectural jewels, such as Torre Tagle Palace, a beautiful mansion dating back to the 18th century. We continue the tour with a visit to San Francisco Convent and its catacombs. The construction of San Francisco church was consecrated in 1673. It has stood up to numerous earthquakes, and has a majestic stone facade and an interior with admirably carved choir seats in Nicaraguan cedar, vaults and columns decorated with plastered Moorish style reliefs. The arcades in the convent’s cloister (16th century) are decorated with Seville tiles. In the beautiful chapter house there is a collection of paintings of the apostles. The underground galleries and catacombs were discovered in 1951 and are gloomy and impressive, containing the bones and skulls of some 70,000 people buried there when it was the town cemetery during the time of the Viceroys.

The tour continues through the more traditional Residential Areas: El Olivar in San Isidro, with olive trees brought from Spain in the 17th century; Miraflores’ Central Park, and Larco Mar, a spot of international thematic attractions which offers a spectacular panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean – Larco Mar has become a distinctive symbol of modern Lima.

A Tour To Sucre’s Dino Track

The dinosaur tracks in Sucre, Bolivia is a definite must see attraction. Located about 6 km outside of Sucre, the small mountain of Cal Orck’o is home to the world’s largest collection of dinosaur tracks. There are about 5,000 impressions of dinosaur footprints from at least 250 different dinosaurs that are embedded on a gigantic, near-vertical limestone rock.

The dinosaur footprints were first discovered in 1994 by workers from the local Sucre cement factory. When the cement workers were clearing the grounds, they uncovered a nearly vertical limestone face bearing thousands of dinosaur footprints.

The footprints are scattered across a gigantic, greyish rock covering about 25,000 square meters (about the size of several soccer fields) and are about 100 meters high. At first the prints just look like holes in the rock. But, after you study them for a while, you’ll see the clear footprints of many different sizes running in long lines across the surface of the rock. For, example, some of the dinosaur footprints you’ll see are of Tyrannosaurus (T-Rex), Brontosaurus, and Triceratops.

It is neat just to gaze upon the tracks for a while and envision which dinosaurs were doing what when they walked through this area millions of years ago. Some of the sets of footprints may have been the scene of a chase and kill by predators.

Experts believe the footprints in the rocks date back some 60 million years, which is before the Andes were formed. Supposedly, there was a lake here surrounded by a forest and dinosaurs would have trudged through the mud in the forest toward the lake in search of water. Before the tracks had a chance to disappear, the tracks would have been covered by sediment, which settled over the mud and preserved the footprints.

The dinosaur tracks have become a huge attraction and have been made into a park known as Parque Cretácico. Along with the dinosaur tracks, the park also features many scary life-size models of dinosaurs, as well as an audiovisual display and a restaurant.

Amboro National Park

Amboró National Park is an ecological masterpiece of almost half a million hectares, located approximately 150 km north west of the city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra. Park Amboro lies in a unique geographical position at the confluence of 3 distinct ecosystems: the Amazon basin, the northern Chaco and the Andes (nowhere else in the world do three such vast environments converge). Amboró National Park contains over 800 bird species, more than the USA and Canada together!

In the 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s, the region of what today is called National Park Amboró, was not a protected area yet. There were many big industrial companies working in the forest, doing lodging and mining activities. In 1973, the park was initially established as a natural reserve called the Reserva de Vida Silvestre German Bush. In 1984 the area officially became a national park, protecting 180.000 HA. This was extended to 637.600 HA in 1991.

Because of its unique geographical location Amboró National Park hosts an incredible variety of flora and fauna. Both highland and lowland animal and plant species can be found in the park. The park also hosts many trees valued for their fine wood such as Mara and various species of palm trees. A huge variety of bromeliads, orchids and forests of giant ferns makes this park very special. Amboró Park is also the home of the jaguar, the rare spectacled bear and other mammal species native to the Amazon.

Perhaps most impressive is the huge number of birds that inhabit the area, one of the the greatest concentrations of bird species per km 2 in the world.

The conservation of Amboró National Park is of scientific interest and vital to humanity, considering that it is one of the richest and most diverse regions in the world with unique flora and fauna. The North side of the park is the most humid area and can be described as tropical rain forest or jungle. In this part, beautiful waterfalls and natural swimming holes with crystalline water can be found.

The Fort of Samaipata, Bolivia

El Fuerte (meaning “The Fort”), near the picturesque town of Samaipata in Santa Cruz, Bolivia is an ancient pre-Colombian ritual site and is the largest carved stone in the world. It was declared a Heritage of Humanity site by UNESCO. Mystery and legends surround this fortress, as no one isn’t quite sure who carved it. It is the largest single rock carving in the world.

Located about 2 hours West of the city of Santa Cruz, the site was first discovered by Spanish colonists who had settled in the area in the 16th century, and established the town of Samaipata. They called it “El Fuerte” (the Fort) because of its shape. But they abandoned Samaipata and left the area soon after, and the town and ruins were covered with vegetation until scholars took notice of it again in the late 1700′s. Excavation began in the early 1900′s.

This archeological site is believed to be originally of Mojocoyan origin, a culture that began sculpting the rock around 300 AD, although many attribute it to the Incas. The rock contains carvings of jaguars, cats, snakes and other animals as well as several deep pits and long grooves and channels presumably used to circulate and store water. At the top of the stone there is a circle of 12 seats with a set of 3 seats in the middle. Locals call this the “Coro de los Sacerdotes” or “Choir of Priests”.

El Fuerte de Samaipata is located a few miles prior to arriving to the town of Samaipata. You can either stop there on your way to town or take a tour from town once you’ve settled in to a hotel or hostel. Vehicles will take you up to a flat area at the base of the carved rock and you have to hike a little from there. You’ll be able to see how small huts were built around the base of the stone, and view excavated portions of an adjoining village nearby. You’ll pay a small entrance fee and this helps with upkeep of El Fuerte and its associated museum. As this is a UNESCO site, and has suffered damage from tourism already, it’s important to take good care of it. Climbing onto the fuerte is not allowed.

The Incas occupied the site during the 1300′s as well, adding several buildings, and carving out the hillsides with their traditional land terracing system of agriculture. There is also a series of niches they cut into the entire length of the right side of the rock. These would have had roofs at one time, as would the remains of several houses found about a hundred meters further on. These are all very similar to temple niches and houses found at Machu Picchu, the great Incan Ruins in Peru.

You can walk all the way around the rock, but do not cross the rope barriers. In the past visitors climbed up onto the rock but this was causing damage. To the right of the rock is a short path that leads to what appears to have been a small village with ruins of several small houses and huts. You’ll also see some very, very deep holes here which may have been wells long ago. Today they are so deep, that if you throw a stone inside them, you will never hear it hit the bottom.

El Fuerte at Samaipata is located high atop a hill in the “sierra” (Andes foothills) and from here the view is spectacular. The highway to the fort is completely paved and offers visitors a fantastic panorama, making the Drive to Samaipata a colorful adventure in itself.

About 10 miles prior to arriving in the town of Samaipata you must take a dirt road that veers off to the left. It is very steep and you will have to drive in low gear. Once you reach the top, there is ample parking and a small visitor’s center where you pay your admission to the site.

The Samaipata Fort is the main tourist attraction in the Samaipata area, but there are many other sites to see during Samaipata Tours.
